MSME Registration FAQ

Every common question about MSME and Udyam registration — answered clearly by our experts.

About MSME & Udyam Registration

Udyam Registration is the official government registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in India, issued by the Ministry of MSME. It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) system in July 2020. Once registered, businesses get a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a digital certificate that unlocks 50+ government benefits, subsidies, and schemes.
These are names for the same registration system at different times. Udyog Aadhaar was the old system (2015–2020). Udyam Registration is the current system (July 2020 onwards). "MSME registration" is the general term for the entire classification system. If you have an old Udyog Aadhaar certificate, you should migrate to the new Udyam portal.
MSME registration is not legally mandatory. However, it is highly recommended since it's free, takes less than 30 minutes, and unlocks massive benefits — collateral-free loans, government tender priority, tax exemptions, and 50+ schemes. There is literally no reason not to register!
Micro Enterprise: Investment ≤ ₹1 Cr AND Turnover ≤ ₹5 Cr. Small Enterprise: Investment ≤ ₹10 Cr AND Turnover ≤ ₹50 Cr. Medium Enterprise: Investment ≤ ₹50 Cr AND Turnover ≤ ₹250 Cr. Both investment AND turnover must be within limits for each category. Service and manufacturing businesses use the same criteria since 2020.

Eligibility & Documents

Any individual, proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited company, public company, OPC, co-operative society, trust, or other legal entity engaged in manufacturing or service activities with turnover up to ₹250 crore can register as an MSME. Includes traders, retailers, manufacturers, and service providers.
Just 2 things: (1) Aadhaar Card of the proprietor/managing partner/authorized signatory, (2) PAN Card of the business/owner. Companies and LLPs must also provide GSTIN. No physical documents needed — entirely OTP-based process. Self-declared financial figures — no CA certificate required.
Yes! Sole proprietorships and partnerships with turnover below the GST threshold don't need GST for Udyam registration. Only companies and LLPs with GST registration mandatorily need GSTIN on the Udyam portal. For those without GST, Aadhaar + PAN is sufficient.
